What You REALLY need for a baby - The Minimal, Mindful, Budget-friendly Guide

Updated: May 13, 2023

If you're like me, you've seen quite a few posts like this that tell you Alllllllllll the things you NEED to have if you're having a baby. Usually you can find them created by Baby Registry sites or baby stores or other places that stand to benefit from loving expectant mothers purchasing more than they actually would need for their baby.

As a fourth time mama, I've narrowed down for you a much more realistic list of the bare neccesities.

MUST HAVES

-A place for baby to sleep (crib or bassinet)

-Diapers and Wipes

-A few clothing items for baby (Zip footie PJs, and Tops with pants for while the cord is healing.)

-Carseat to bring baby home

-A way to feed baby - bottles and if you're not breastfeeding, formula -If it's your first, then I reccomend nipple cream

YOU CAN ALWAYS BUY LATER

-more clothing (don't forget, you may get hand-me downs, gifts, and there are always secondhand shops!)

-diaper rash cream

-stroller

-pacifier if your baby likes it

-swaddle if your baby likes it -highchair

-baby food accessories such as blender or cube mold for freezing food

-toys, books, etc

-Breast pump if you are returning to work, and decide to stick with breastfeeding. Often insurance will help cover this

NICE TO HAVE

+Baby Carrier for wearing baby - I used Ergo, Moby, and Baby Ktan. They were all great for different reasons but the Ergo for me had the longest range of use

+Bottle Brush +Bath for baby - I love the Blooming Bath style!

+Diaper Bag (But honestly if you carry a bigger purse just put a diaper and wipes in there! Or just use a tote bag! You will probably prefer this style to a traditional diaper bag and bags NOT marketed as "Diaper Bags" are far cheaper!)

+Brush and Comb for baby
